Tips for Decorating Your Dining Room

Choose the right Dining Table:
The shape and size of your dining room table is where it all begins.  The choice of dining room tables should be reflected on the shape of your dining room.  If your dining room is square, choose either a round or square table, or if the room is large enough, choose a rectangular table with plenty of seating and a matching china cabinet or buffet.  When comparing dining room table sizes and shapes, be sure that there will be ample walking room for guests to maneuver around the table and people sitting at it.  Doing this will keep everything proportional and make your dining room look proper, not overly crowded or under furnished.

Choose the right lighting:
The lighting in your dining room has to be sufficient to light the room enough for all occasions.  You may need to purchase a chandelier (or the like) that has dimmer controls to set moods for romantic dimmers.  Likewise the light fixture should be able to put out enough light so if you're entertaining a large party, everyone will have ample light for the atmosphere you are trying to portray.

Choose the right sized rug:
This is often one of the most overlooked pieces of the dining room.  Area Rugs are a great way to add dimension to a room. They provide an extra edge in style, they dampen sounds, and they can protect your floors as well.  When you choose the size of your rug, be sure to take into account the width and length of your table and what that size will be when people are sitting at it.  A good rule of thumb is an extra 2-3 feet on each side extra to have enough room for all 4 legs of the chairs that people are sitting at to remain on the rug and not partially on the floor creating an angle.

Choosing the right accompanying pieces:
Your dining room should provide you with extra storage from the kitchen.  China cabinets, buffets, sideboards, and servers are all great accessory pieces that can provide storage for tablecloths, napkins, etc. as well as accentuate the style of your table and chair set.  Be sure when choosing these accessory pieces to not crowd your table.  Also for blank walls, if you prefer to not have a full china cabinet, be sure to add some type of wall art above the buffet (or likewise piece) to take full advantage of your dining rooms decor.  Mirrors or matching themed pictures/prints are great alternatives to china cabinets but china cabinets give you the added benefit of more storage.
